The Agreement will boost trade in goods and create new economic opportunities, with targeted cooperation to enhance Kenya’s economic development

As of 1 July 2024, the EU and Kenya will start the application of the Economic Partnership Agreement.

The agreement will guarantee duty-free and quota-free access to the EU market for all exports from Kenya (except weapons) as soon as it enters into force, as well as the partial and gradual opening of the Kenyan market to imports from ‘Union.

The agreement also includes binding provisions on trade and sustainable development, such as climate and environmental protection and workers’ rights, and a transparent dispute resolution mechanism. This is the most ambitious economic partnership agreement the EU will have with a developing country in terms of sustainability provisions. Negotiations for the Partnership Agreement began in 2021. The Commission submitted the proposed agreement to the Council in September last year. The EU is Kenya’s first export destination and second trading partner, for a total of 3.3 billion euros of trade in 2022, an increase of 27% compared to 2018.

The EU and Kenya are negotiating a reciprocal protocol on rules of origin. See joint statement on rules of origin. In the absence of a protocol on rules of origin, the applicable rules of origin for importation into the EU of products originating in Kenya are those contained in Annex II of the Market Access Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/1076) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 8 June 2016).
